2020 Young Artist Competition: Collegiate Division

   Final round held at the AFS Festival on April 3-4, 2020

  • The Collegiate Division is open to all students currently enrolled full time in an undergraduate or graduate institution. There is no age limit. Proof of enrollment must be submitted with the application 

  • All applicants must be current AFS members (the membership must be current through September 2020).  You may join or renew at austinflutesociety.org.

  • All applicants must complete an online application found at austinflutesociety.org/collegiate-division.  The application and application fee must be submitted to YACCollegiate2020@gmail.com by Wednesday, January 15, 2020 by 11:59 CST. Online applications accepted beginning November 15, 2019.  No late entries will be accepted.

  • A recording for the preliminary round must include the required repertoire and  MUST be an mp3, mp4 or wav file. Video recordings not accepted. 

  • The recording should demonstrate the highest possible audio quality so your performance can be evaluated successfully. No speaking on the recording. Only a continuous performance of the entire work or movement is allowed. Recordings must not be edited or contain studio-produced effects. By uploading a music file, an applicant agrees their recording is continuous and unaltered.

  • Results will be available announced via email and posted on the AFS website on or before Monday, February 10, 2020.

  • Finalists are required to perform in person in the final round of the competition at the AFS Festival in Austin on Saturday, April 4, 2020. Finalists are responsible for their own transportation and lodging for the competition.

  • Accompanists are the responsibility of the finalists for competitions. An AFS accompanist may be provided for a fee if requested on your application.

  • A final round performance in excess of the maximum performance time allotted WILL disqualify the applicant (no more than 20 minutes).

  • Incomplete applications will be subject to disqualification.

  • Application fees and membership dues are not refundable.

  • The decision of the judges is final.

Repertoire

 

Pre-recorded: Pièce for solo flute by Jacques Ibert, (Published by Alphonse Leduc) and Sonata in A Minor for Solo Flute, Wq.132 by C.P.E. Bach, II. Allegro (any edition) with repeats. Deadline for the preliminary recorded round is January 15, 2020.

 

Final Round: East Wind for solo flute by Shulamit Ran (Published by Theodore Presser), plus a piece of their choice, not to exceed 20 minutes for both pieces. The final round will be in Austin on Saturday, April 4, 2020. 

Prizes

At the conclusion of the final round, three winners will be announced. Cash prizes of $500, $300, and $200 will be awarded to the top three performers.  Previous prize winners are not eligible to participate.
