The Austin Flute Society serves the greater metropolitan area of Austin, TX. Our members are people of all ages and professions, including students, teachers, professionals and amateurs.
This non-profit organization was formed in 1987 to organize educational opportunities, member recitals, and guest flutist events in the Austin area. We are proud to continue this tradition today and also offer an annual Festival and Young Artist Competition and thriving Flute Choir.
To promote the performance, study, and enjoyment of flute music by providing educational opportunities, presenting guest artists, and offering member performances.
Sarah Jane Hargis,
Sarah Jane Hargis, artist for Azumi Flutes and Earthquaker Devices, is an internationally-acclaimed performer and composer of classical, modern and improvisational music. Her adventurous spirit allows Sarah Jane to take a full, rich, classical tone and combine it with a passionate exploration of electronic sound effects. Sarah Jane fuses blues, jazz, electronic music, pop, and improvisation into an exciting blend of ambient grooves that has been described as “melodically purifying” and “an improvisational playground.” She has been teaching flute as a university professor/lecturer, private instructor and guest lecturer in schools and universities around North America for over twenty years. Sarah Jane has also studied, trained and taught yoga over the last 25 years and teaches Iyengar based yoga classes in both private and group settings. Sarah Jane currently teaches at St Edward’s University in Austin, TX. She holds a Master’s of Music in Flute Performance from the University of New Mexico, and a Bachelor’s of Music Education from Eastern Kentucky University. In addition she also has 12 years training in Suzuki Method teaching. Her teachers include Alexa Still, Jim Walker, Valerie Potter, Adam Kuenzel and George Pope.

Flutist and educator, Dr. Hilary Janysek has been featured as a soloist with the Ball State Symphony Orchestra, the Texas State University Orchestra, the West Fork New Music Festival, and the Victoria Bach Festival as the Young Artist. She currently performs with the Brazos Breeze Flute Choir in Bryan, TX, and is an active chamber musician and clinician, performing and presenting at events such as the Society of Composers International Convention, the College Music Society Conference, the National Flute Association Convention, the Texas Flute Society Festival, and the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. An enthusiastic educator, Dr. Janysek currently teaches music history and flute at Texas Lutheran University, flute at Schreiner University, and is the flute instructor for Lake Travis ISD. Prior to that, she was the Graduate Assistant of Music History and Music Education at Ball State University (BSU) and was the adjunct instructor of flute at Purdue University. Dr. Janysek graduated with Doctor of Arts degree in Flute Performance from BSU in December 2018. At BSU, she studied with Dr. Mihoko Watanabe and completed a certificate in Entrepreneurial Music. She also received her Master of Music Degree from Ball State University and her Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Texas State University, where she studied with Dr. Adah Toland Jones.

Austin Flute Choir Conductor
Isaac Medina is a flutist and teacher in the Austin area. He is in his fourteenth year of public education and serves as the associate director of bands at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, TX. Mr. Medina performs with the Cedar Park Winds and conducts the Austin Flute Choir, which has been invited to perform at the 2021 National Flute Association Convention in Washington DC. Mr. Medina previously performed with the Abilene Philharmonic, El Paso Opera, El Paso Wind Symphony, Dallas Wind Symphony, Roswell Symphony, and the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra. Isaac received a bachelor's degree in Music Education from New Mexico State University and a Master of Music Degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Medina is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, The Austin Flute Society, and the National Flute Association. He will forever be indebted to his mentors, Dr. Lisa Van Winkle, Barbara Lambrecht, Jerry Junkin, and Marianne Gedigian.
