The Deep Midwinter, a Community flute recital

“The Deep Midwinter”: an AFS Community Recital

Recital Date: Sunday December 6th, 2026 at 2pm

Submissions Due: October 15th

Submit your piece to play!

Austin Flute Society presents a community flute recital twice a year, where flutists in the Austin Community perform solos, chamber music, and original compositions for each other, families and friends in a supportive and encouraging environment. Submit the music you would like to play by October 15th to get on the program!

Flutists of all ages and ability levels welcome. Ensembles including instruments besides flute are welcome, as long as one flute is involved. If you have a chamber piece you would like to perform and are looking for people to play it with, indicate that on the form :) We can also help connect you with accompanists.

Recital Theme: “The Deep Midwinter”Winter is a season for rest, darkness, and waiting. In colder climates snow coats the ground and people gather for connection, reflection, hope and warmth. Here in Austin, we dream of snow and gather to connect as the days get shorter, while the bats, hummingbirds and monarchs migrate south for the season. Let’s connect over flute music - bring your sweet ballades, reflective adagios, expressive ensembles, and wintery melodies.

Here are a couple of reflective winter poems for inspiration:

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

Winter Stars, by Sara Teasdale

I went out at night alone;

The young blood flowing beyond the sea

Seemed to have drenched my spirit’s wings—

 I bore my sorrow heavily.

But when I lifted up my head

From shadows shaken on the snow,

I saw Orion in the east

 Burn steadily as long ago.

From windows in my father’s house,

Dreaming my dreams on winter nights,

I watched Orion as a girl

 Above another city’s lights.

Years go, dreams go, and youth goes too,

The world’s heart breaks beneath its wars,

All things are changed, save in the east

The faithful beauty of the stars.
